Brief history: from prehistory to medieval centers

The first settlement in the Nitra area dates back to the late 5th and early 6th centuries, when Slavs began to settle along local watercourses. In the following centuries the city developed dynamically, gaining importance especially during the formation of the Principality of Nitra under Prince Pribina. In the 8th and 9th centuries Nitra became one of the most important centers of the Great Moravian state, hosting the first Christian buildings and a bishopric, which started the path of cultural and religious development of the region.

Over the centuries, the city went through many key moments - from periods of prosperity, to Tartar and Turkish invasions, to difficult moments associated with wars and political changes. Although Nitra has been destroyed many times, its heritage has endured, and historic buildings such as Nitra Castle remain witnesses to its former glory.
