History - traces of the Tatra past

The origin of the region's name comes from the Old Slavic term "Tritri," referring to rock formations. Already from the 8th to the 10th century, the Tatra area was a no-man's land, and in the 12th century colonization by German farmers, traders and miners began. Over the centuries, the region went through various stages of division between the aristocracy and the clergy.

The founding of Stary Smokovec in 1793, when Count Štefan Csáky erected a hunting lodge here, marked the beginning of the spa tradition. The development of tourism accelerated with the construction of the railroad (1871) and the first hotels, such as the Grand Hotel Starý Smokovec (1904) and the later cable car to Hrebienok (1908). The modern administration, formed between 1990 and 1999, consolidated the originally independent settlements into a unique tourist unit.
